Stand Up Diapering: Yes, There Is a Trick to It!

You know what is one of the worst things in the world? Trying to put a diaper on a squirming toddler who absolutely does not want to be on their back. They kick you and it hurts and at the end of all of it, no one is speaking to each other and everyone needs alone time to breath. It is all around an awful experience.

So imagine my surprise when I started in a Montessori toddler room and was told they did their diapering standing up. Umm, what? That seems like an absolute disaster, but I can tell you now that it is so easy. That is because I know the #1 trick to stand up diapering that no one seems to know. And yes, it does work with cloth diapers also.I If you are interested in cloth diapers, check out cloth diapering 101. Stand Up Diapering You Say?

Stand up diapering is a way for toddlers to take more ownership over their toileting habits. Toddlers are at an age where they are wanting to be in control. When you diaper them while they are on their backs, they feel like they have no control. And as any caregiver knows, a toddler with no control = tantrum city.

What Does It Entail?

So when the diaper is simply wet, the toddler helps take it off and put it in the garbage. If it is a poopy diaper, obviously the adult handles it, but we clean the toddler while they are still standing. We have a stool in the bathroom that they bend over and put their hands on so we can clean them.

When the toddler is ready for their diaper, they come to us and we put their diaper on while they are standing up.

I call this the knee pin. Look at where my knee is. I pin the diaper between me and the toddler’s bottom. That means I have two hands free to get the diaper on and adjusted. Cloth diapers take a bit more adjusting, but I can whip a disposable on a toddler in about 3 seconds flat.

Do you diaper your toddler standing up? Have you had success with it?

We change many of my daughter’s diapers standing up. We have found that she feels more part of the process if I let her hold the front in place and I arrange on bottom and sides. When she is very wiggly it is a little tougher, but gives her something to focus on for the few seconds it takes for me to get sides done. Team work, makes it easier. Love that you have posted this and the ‘knee pin’ idea is great. If I had read when we first started and she was younger would have definitely used that technique.
