Slow Progress with KonMari

I have been making slow progress decluttering my whole life after reading “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. The KonMari method is unlike any other I’ve tried before. (To read a little more about my previous progress, read part 1 here and part 2 here.) It is also working so much better than the other methods I have used.

To sum up, you ask yourself if each item you own sparks joy. If it doesn’t, you get rid of it. This has been extremely helpful to me because I enjoy thinking that someone else may discover something I have donated and it could bring them joy. You are also supposed to finish discarding first. This is the step I am still on and that I still struggle with. I don’t have the time or energy to go through every single thing I own at once. But I am trying to take large chunks of my house (like one whole closet or an entire bookshelf) and going through it all at one time.

So, let me show you what I accomplished this weekend.

Boxes and Boxes of Donations

Savers probably loves me and hates me at the same time. This Saturday, I had Andrew drop off my donation which consisted of:

  • a box of VHS tapes (like Lizzie McGuire), DVDs, and CDs
  • a box of household stuff including Christmas decorations, 8 coffee mugs and 2 Pokemon jelly jars we used as glasses
  • a box of kids toys and books
  • another box of kids books
  • a reusable shopping bag full of tupperware
  • a garbage bag full of women’s clothes, shoes, and accessories
  • 2 old but still usable suitcases
  • a cheapie guitar I never learned to play

This is about half of the stuff I donated. Sometimes I wonder if there is a black hole somewhere in my house because for real, where did this all come from?

Master Bedroom Progress

Is there still a bunch of stuff in my bedroom? Yes. But is there progress? Yes. I am happy with how things are going in here. Most of the stuff that is on the floor is stuff that is sticking around, but doesn’t have a permanent home yet. That box of stuff in the foreground is my “gift” box. It is all stuff that I have around if I need a gift for someone. Most of it is either things I found on clearance or gifts I have received that I can’t use for some reason, but don’t want to donate because it is so nice.

It is interesting how naturally things are finding homes once I get rid of all of the extra stuff. Once I took out all of the extra clothes in my closet, magically they all fit.

So I am slowly working my way through “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” I am still stuck in chapter 2 because I am still decluttering, but I don’t mind. Slow and steady wins the decluttering race, right?

How is decluttering going for you? Any victories?

Hi, Mikki….bought the book and started last week with m clothes…the “spark joy” comment worked for me better than any other sorting question I’ve used before. I’ve liked and item, but the fact that I ham pulling and tugging on it when I wear it does NOT spark joy….GONE!!! I ended up,taking 200 prices to Turnstyle Consignment and had them donate the things they didn’t want to take. I had to,close my eyes as I helped her bag the “donate” items but had decided once out, forever out!!! I agree that you can’t really do it all at once unless you live in a childless, spouse less, workless bugle of a world, but I still get satisfaction out of doing what I can, when I can. Thanks for the inspiration!!! Marianne

I’m so glad it helped you! Wow, 200. That is crazy! It is hard to see it all again, but I keep telling myself it will spark joy with someone else 🙂
